Gareth Southgate was left with more questions than answers following England’s 1-1 draw with Hungary on Tuesday night.
Southgate can focus on fine-tuning his plans for Qatar now that World Cup qualifying is largely assured, barring an awful collapse in their final two games against Albania and San Marino next month.
Southgate has little control over this situation. In the match against Hungary, Harry Kane appeared off the pace and was finally replaced. Kane has yet to register a Premier League goal this season due to his poor form at Tottenham Hotspur.
Even if the England manager tries to downplay it, the performances of his talismanic striker will be a source of concern.
Southgate will no doubt speak to Kane in the coming weeks, as the two have a close relationship. Even if Kane’s performances do not improve, he does not appear to be in danger of losing his place in the team.
