Following Northern Ireland’s defeat to Switzerland, the emotion of indignation at a referee’s decision was all too familiar.
What has been less common in recent years – if not historically – is having no realistic chance of making the finals with three group games remaining.
Many supporters, though, will be dejected after Ian Baraclough’s injury-hit side surrendered a 1-0 half-time lead in a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat against Bulgaria in Sofia on Tuesday night.
The character of the defeat, particularly the toothless nature of the second half performance, contrasted sharply with the optimism that surrounded the team after two victories and a tie in September.
Baraclough is a ‘glass half-full’ type of boss, but Northern Ireland supporters will be wondering where they stand with Lithuania and Italy visiting Windsor Park in November to finish their World Cup qualifying campaign.
BBC Sport Northern Ireland has looked into some of those topics and begun a conversation about possible responses.
