Ian Baraclough Condemns The ‘Diabolical’ Red Card In Northern Ireland Defeat

Ian Baraclough was enraged by a red card given to Jamal Lewis, which he felt was significant in Northern Ireland’s World Cup ambitions being effectively crushed by a 2-0 defeat in Geneva.

Lewis received his second yellow card in the 37th minute of the encounter against Switzerland, after referee Slavko Vincic deemed the 17 seconds he took over a throw-in to be excessive.

The Slovenian official appeared to forget that he had previously booked Lewis for a tug on Breel Embolo, but after a little delay, he brandished the red card to transform the game’s complexion, which was eventually decided when Steven Zuber and Christian Fassnacht scored in stoppage time of each half.

“I can’t say what I want to say without getting into trouble,” Baraclough said. “I’m annoyed, appalled … It’s a diabolical decision. The referee has not realised he booked him earlier on and, whether he thinks it is time-wasting or not, you normally go up to a player and tell him to hurry up or you’ll do something about it. But he didn’t get any warning at all.

“Whether he has been swayed by Swiss players or the crowd, I think the occasion got to him. It’s changed the entire complexion of the game.”
