With a deserved triumph in Spain’s capital, reigning champions Atletico Madrid drew level with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga and inflicted further damage on Ronald Koeman’s struggling Barcelona.
The first goal came from Thomas Lemar, who finished beautifully at the culmination of a play featuring Joao Felix and Luis Suarez. After that, Suarez came in against his former club to put Atletico in command.
Antoine Griezmann made a late substitute appearance against his former team as Atletico Madrid reveled in their dominance.
Despite all of Barcelona’s woes this season, this was their first loss in La Liga, leaving them in eighth place with 12 points, five behind Diego Simeone’s side, who are second only on goal difference but have played one more game than rivals Real.
Barca had three victories and three draws prior to this, with back-to-back humiliating 3-0 losses in the Champions League doing the most to jeopardize Koeman’s status at the club.
