Pep Guardiola’s body language did not hide his emotions, as it yelled out how much the Premier League champions and their manager valued their victory over Chelsea.
The 1-0 triumph, which was well-deserved and completed by Gabriel Jesus’ deflected 53rd-minute strike, inscribed Guardiola’s name even more indelibly in Manchester City’s history, since it was the club’s 221st victory in all competitions, the most ever.
This, though, was a minor point following a display that had all the markers of a champion’s performance and delivered a strong message to Chelsea and any other opponents that Manchester City will not relinquish their title easy.
Guardiola whirled on his heels after another piece of possession went awry, ordering substitutes Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho to come in before Chelsea had the chance to snatch an equaliser that would have been grand larceny.
