Newcastle assistant manager Graeme Jones and striker Dwight Gayle had a training-ground brawl this week, with captain Jamaal Lascelles having to intervene after things got heated.
In recent days, the club’s Tyneside headquarters has been a tumultuous environment due to growing discontent among some players with manager Steve Bruce, who vowed on Thursday that he would not resign despite supporters’ calls for him to do so.
Even though there is significant frustration with Bruce, sources close to the players say they remain together as a squad and are desperate to secure their first win of the season at home against Leeds United on Friday evening.
That was clear on Tuesday, when the 60-year-old convened a meeting, only to enrage certain players with his erroneous use of running statistics. There’s also a sense that the training regimen is tailored to Bruce’s needs rather than the team’s.
