Rangers were defeated by Lyon in their Group A opening, resulting in a rare Europa League group defeat. At Ibrox, Cameroon forward Karl Toko Ekambi arced a breathtaking 23rd-minute opening before James Tavernier’s attempted clearing deflected into his own net.
First-half chances were missed by Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent, and John Lundstram, while Tavernier’s free-kick hit the crossbar at 2-0.
Lyon, on the other hand, won thanks to a composed performance. Both teams had the same number of shots on goal, but the Ligue 1 squad won with better poise and nous at the appropriate times in an outstanding away performance.
Rangers have now lost four of their first 11 games in all competitions this season, more than doubling the number of defeats they suffered in 90 minutes last season, and their unbeaten record in the Europa League group stage has come to an end.
Steven Gerrard now has to prepare his team for a home match against Motherwell on Sunday, although the Ibrox coach will be concerned about Kent’s fitness after he was substituted with 20 minutes to go after pulling up.
