According to rumors, Manchester United wanted to sign Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer transfer window but were unwilling to match Napoli’s asking price. Before the 2021/22 season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it a priority to sign a centre-back, and Koulibaly was on the shortlist.
Over the summer, Man United were associated with a number of central defenders, including Sven Botman, Jules Kounde, and Cristian Romero.
The Red Devils eventually signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid for £41 million, much to the delight of fans around the world.
Varane has had a strong start to his career in England, winning praise for his performances against Wolves and Newcastle United.
However, if recent rumours from Italy are to be believed, United and Napoli were in talks over Koulibaly, and Napoli’s asking price had been drastically reduced.
