Manchester United’s success this summer is exemplified by the fact that they begin their Champions League campaign in Switzerland on Tuesday evening with two players who have won the competition four times apiece with Real Madrid.
One of the most valuable assets Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane bring to United is their exceptional European record, which includes winning the coveted La Decima – Madrid’s 10th European Cup victory – followed by three more Champions Leagues in the four seasons that followed.
When you consider that they have won five UEFA Super Cups and eight FIFA Club World Cups between them, you can see how much European experience United has gotten for their £62.8 million investment.
Not quite the final pieces in the puzzle, as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stated before correcting himself, but two players who have the potential to transform United into serious contenders.
They’ll be helped by the fact that they’ll be in Group F, which includes Swiss winners Young Boys, Atalanta, and Villarreal.
‘We’re getting the team’s spine, and you can see the experience and quality,’ Solskjaer explained.
