In front of a rowdy New York crowd, world number one Ashleigh Barty lost in the third round of the US Open to Shelby Rogers.
In the final set, Wimbledon champion Barty led 5-2 and twice served for the match, but home favorite Rogers battled back into contention.
The world number 43 then stunned the top seed 6-2 1-6 7-6 in the ensuing tie-break (7-5). In the first set, Barty lacked rhythm, but she appeared to have found, if not her best form, enough to go to the fourth round.
Rogers, with the support of the audience, put on a spectacular performance of shotmaking to beat Barty for the first time in six tries. It’s only Barty’s eighth loss in an otherwise stellar season.
“You guys are in control of the tournament,” Rogers told the crowd.
“You were awesome and I didn’t want to leave. I just wanted to make balls and stay in the match.”
