Ahead Of The Game: Chelsea Could See FIFA Club World Cup Campaign Moved Away From Japan…

Chelsea’s bid to win the Club World Cup for the first time later this year is in jeopardy, as the competition may be shifted away from Japan owing to the Covid-19 pandemic’s ongoing impact.

FIFA wants supporters to be able to watch their premier club competition, which will be tough in Japan due to the country’s ongoing battle with a fifth wave of viruses and a delayed vaccination implementation.

The political fallout from the Japanese government’s handling of the pandemic, including the contentious choice to hold the Olympics and Paralympics, accelerated this week with Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s surprising resignation after only a year in office.

Following next month’s general election, his successor is unlikely to allow an international invasion of football fans in December.

After hosting the postponed 2020 Club World Cup, which was won by Bayern Munich in February, Qatar is the obvious alternative.

FIFA’s ambitious preparations for the tournament have already been hampered by the pandemic, which has caused them to postpone the expansion to a new 24-club format, which was scheduled to take place in China in June of this year.
