Rio Ferdinand has advised Manchester United to utilize a better defensive midfielder than the on-loan Fred, warning that the Brazil international ‘let himself down’ in his position.

Fred’s performances during United’s early season matches have been criticized, with one of Ferdinand’s former colleagues, Roy Keane, suggesting that the 28-year-old has few unique attributes.

Former United captain Rio Ferdinand has joined a growing number of fans in criticizing a player who has been used frequently by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

‘I don’t think he’s enough of a hurdle,’ Ferdinand said on his Vibe with FIVE show. ‘He gets off the leash, goes and smells trouble and flies out sometimes. That’s not necessarily the best way to put out that [dangerous] situation.
