Atletico Madrid grabbed a 2-2 draw against Villarreal at home on Sunday thanks to an incredible own goal by Aissa Mandi in the final seconds. After Luis Suarez had cancelled out Manu Trigueros’ initial score earlier in the second half, Villarreal looked to be heading for an improbable triumph when new signing Arnaut Danjuma regained their advantage in the 74th minute.
While Villarreal could not believe their misfortune, Atletico deserved a draw after shooting 23 efforts at goal to the visitors’ two, both of which were successful. Atletico Madrid averted their first home defeat since February thanks to the late drama, and they now have seven points after three games, tied with five other teams for first place on goal difference.
After dominating the first half, Atletico fell behind early in the second half to a powerful shot from midfielder Trigueros from just inside the area, following a lay off from Yeremi Pino. Soon after, Luis Suarez equalized for the hosts, brilliantly tapping in a feed from Angel Correa, who had previously scored Atletico’s three goals this season in victories over Celta Vigo and Elche.
