The Premier League season is just three weeks old, and we’ve already reached the international break – but there have already been plenty of twists and turns. Spurs are flying high at the top of the table after winning their third game in a row, while close rivals Arsenal are sensationally propping up the table after yet another humiliating defeat.
In other matches, West Ham proved their European credentials with a spirited draw against Crystal Palace, while Liverpool and Chelsea shared the spoils following a tense battle at Anfield.
In the testing inferno that is Anfield, any side lacking in mental fortitude would have disintegrated after having a player sent off. Chelsea, though, is an exception. Instead, they battened down the hatches and came up with a fantastic point. Of course, they would have wanted to win, but Thomas Tuchel pumped his fist at the end of the game, knowing that his players had given their all for the cause and put their bodies on the line for a point.
In the instance of Reece James, rather literally. His handball thwarted a clear goal-scoring opportunity, and when Mohamed Salah converted the following penalty, Liverpool were clear favorites to score again. Tuchel, on the other hand, stepped up at halftime, removing N’Golo Kante and Kai Havertz and replacing them with Thiago Silva. Chelsea were able to dig in, shut down the space, and fight valiantly as a result of this alteration.
This season is still young, but these are the kinds of performances and results that distinguish champions. They embraced the game’s dark arts in order to beat the clock and amass the attacking resources necessary to score at will. Manchester City, beware!
