Following the cancellation of Sunday’s match against Marseille, Nice will have to play their next home match against Bordeaux behind closed doors. Pablo Fernandez, a physio with Marseille, has also been suspended for his acts. Before Nice fans flooded the pitch, Marseille’s Dimitri Payet was hit by a bottle as he prepared to take a corner and tossed it back into the crowd.
As stewards and players fought to keep supporters in check, chaos followed, with the players eventually abandoning the field. Nice’s players, who were leading 1-0 at the moment, returned to finish the game, but Marseille’s players refused. The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP), the French league’s regulatory body, called both teams to a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday.
The LFP has launched an investigation into the behavior of the Nice fans, as well as the acts of the players on the field and the game’s outcome. The game will not be counted in the Ligue 1 rankings until then. On September 8, the disciplinary committee will reveal the investigation’s findings and make any necessary decisions.
