Jose Mourinho’s reign as Roma manager began with a win over Trabzonspor of Turkey in the Europa Conference League play-off first leg.

When captain Lorenzo Pellegrini converted Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s cross, Roma took the lead. Andreas Cornelius scored an equalizer for Trabzonspor after coming off the bench.

Eldor Shomurodov of Uzbekistan scored a late winner on his Roma debut after joining from Genoa in the offseason. Unless Roma loses the second leg at Stadio Olimpico on Thursday, they will qualify for the group stage of the new third-tier European competition.

Mourinho, the former manager of Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, took over from Paulo Fonseca at the end of last season. On Sunday, Roma will play Fiorentina in their Serie A debut.
