According to The Athletic, Manchester United is preparing to make Paul Pogba the club’s highest-paid player with a new five-year contract for £400,000 per week. Pogba’s current £290,000-a-week contract expires in a year, and United are ‘desperate’ to keep him at Old Trafford before the transfer market ends.
However, the French midfielder has yet to accept United’s latest offer, which will pay him more than David de Gea’s weekly wage of £375,000. Pogba’s new contract will also see him earn more than United’s summer additions Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho, who have signed long-term deals for about £340,000 and £300,000 per week.
United’s management is keen for Pogba to sign the new contract, which will last at least four years with the option of being extended until 2025.
They hope the huge raise in his £290,000-per-week salary will help maintain the player’s market worth and prevent them from losing him for free next summer after spending £89 million to recruit him in 2016.
