According to sources, Phil Jones turned a deaf ear to Raphael Varane’s appeal for his No 4 shirt after the star’s Manchester United departure placed him further down the pecking order. Varane was introduced to his new Red Devils fans ahead of kick-off on Saturday, when Bruno Fernandes and his teammates thrashed Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford.
The £42 million Frenchman had a dream start to his Manchester career, with the Frenchman looking to replace Victor Lindelof alongside Harry Maguire in the next games – and do so while wearing the No 19 shirt. Varane requested No 4 – which he also wears for France – as their talks neared a conclusion, but Jones flatly refused, according to MEN.
Jones has worn the No. 4 shirt since joining United from Blackburn in 2011, but the 29-year-old hasn’t featured for the club in over 18 months. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer froze out the centre-back after a disastrous 2018-19 season. With his contract expiring in 2023, the club has yet to generate interest in selling the player this summer.
When United finally manages to move Jones, Varane will almost certainly get the shirt that Sir Alex Ferguson once predicted “may be our greatest player ever.”
