England v India: Joe Root Has Not Peaked – Jonny Bairstow

Despite his impressive form, England captain Joe Root, according to teammate Jonny Bairstow, can improve even more. On the third day of the second Test against India at Lord’s, Root scored a stunning 180 not out, his second century in eight days.

In the year 2021, it was his fifth Test century. Only Denis Compton and Michael Vaughan have scored six times for England in a calendar year.

“He is only 30 years old. He is still coming to his peak,” Bairstow told BBC Sport. “It is really exciting and to see how far he could potentially go is great for English cricket.”

With two days remaining, the game is tantalisingly poised, thanks to Root’s magnificent effort, which helped England reach 391 all out, a 27-run lead.

He barely missed out on becoming the first England player to score three double hundreds in a calendar year when he ran out of partners. “A heck of a lot, like he does to English cricket,” Bairstow responded when asked what Root means to the England team.
