Champions Atletico Edge Victory At Celta

Atletico Madrid opened their title defense by defeating Celta Vigo despite both teams being down to ten men. Atletico Madrid’s Argentine forward Angel Correa scored a goal in either half, slamming the opening goal into the top corner and then finishing off a quick counter-attack.

Celta’s Iago Aspas had equalized from the penalty spot and the hosts should have gotten a point late on. With the goal gaping, Aspas got around goalkeeper Jan Oblak but fired into the sidenetting.

Hugo Mallo of Celta and Mario Hermoso of Atletico Madrid received two red cards in injury time for a scuffle, as well as eight yellow cards throughout the game. Kieran Trippier, an England international who has been linked with Manchester United and Arsenal, came on as a second-half replacement for Atletico Madrid, replacing Koke on 66 minutes.

Real Madrid, who finished second last season, got off to a good start with a 4-1 win over Alaves on Saturday. Barcelona won 4-2 against Real Sociedad at the Nou Camp on Sunday, marking the start of their era without record goalscorer Lionel Messi.
