On his first Premier League appearance since the European Championship, Brentford and Arsenal fans gave Bukayo Saka a standing ovation.
Saka, 19, missed a critical penalty as England lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy in July, and he was one of several players who received racial abuse on social media in the aftermath.
With the Gunners down 1-0 at the Brentford Community Stadium, he came on after 59 minutes. Thousands of spectators erupted in applause. Saka experienced a similar reaction against Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season friendly last weekend.
However, the England striker was unable to make an impact for the Gunners at Brentford, as Christian Norgaard added to Sergi Canos’ opening in a 2-0 win for the Bees.
