Team USA won their fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, defeating France 87-82. It was the second time the two sides had faced in the competition, with France defeating the USA in the group stage for the first time since 2004.
Gregg Popovich’s favorites, on the other hand, who had struggled in the lead-up, found their stride when it mattered most. Kevin Durant was the top player for the United States once again, scoring 29 points.
France mounted a late fourth-quarter comeback, but fell just short as the US struck critical shots to win their seventh gold medal out of the past eight on offer.
“The first time we played together as an entire team, we lost to France [in the group],” Jrue Holiday remarked. “So we believed it was only fair to meet them in gold and reclaim our victory.”
