After losing the Olympic light-heavyweight final to Cuba’s Arlen Lopez, Ben Whittaker had to settle for silver. The slick Wolverhampton 24-year-old jinked and dived her way about the ring, but she struggled to land a glove on the more experienced, muscular 28-year-old, who won gold in the middleweight division in Rio.
Whittaker did manage to strike a crisp one-two combination near the end of the second, which Lopez acknowledged, but openings were few and far between.
Despite the Australian judge’s decision, the Cuban dominated the final round to win the match 4-1. Lopez wins his second gold medal, following his victory in the middleweight division at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Regardless, Whittaker’s progress to the final was remarkable, albeit he may have to abandon his aim of becoming mayor of Wolverhampton, which he stated he planned to accomplish if he won gold.
