Men’s Olympic Football: Brazil, Japan, Mexico And Spain In Semi-Final

In the second last-four encounter, Japan will face Spain. After a 0-0 draw, the hosts defeated New Zealand 4-2 on penalties, while Spain fought back from the verge of elimination to defeat Ivory Coast 5-2 in extra time.

Ivory Coast appeared to be heading to the semi-finals when Max Gradel put them ahead 2-1 in the first minute of added time at the end of the 90 minutes. Rafa Mir of Wolves equalized with his first touch off the bench, then scored twice in extra time to help Spain reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 21 years.

While that game had seven goals, Mexico’s game versus South Korea had nine, with the former prevailing 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals against Japan.

The hosts are currently one win away from winning their first medal in men’s football since the 1968 Games, when they took bronze.
