Marcus Rashford has intimated that if he had knew he wouldn’t play a key role for England at Euro 2020, he could have opted for shoulder surgery instead of travelling.
The Manchester United attacker responded to people who have dubbed him “selfish” for joining Gareth Southgate’s squad and delaying his procedure, which means he will miss the start of the new season, in a lengthy social media message on Friday.
Rashford is hopeful of returning before the end of October, although he might miss United’s first 11 Premier League and Champions League games, as well as England’s next five World Cup qualifiers.
The decision to have surgery was reached after talks between Rashford and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer earlier this week, just before the player was scheduled to return to pre-season training on Sunday. ‘On hindsight, if I had known (sic) I wouldn’t have played a significant role in the Euros, would I have gone?’ the 23-year-old wrote on Friday in a telling statement. Isn’t hindsight a lovely thing…’
