Fernando Torres has returned to Atletico Madrid as the head coach of the club’s under-19 team for the coming season. The former striker, who retired from the game in 2019 after finishing a second term with Atletico Madrid the previous year, had joined the club’s development system as a coach last season but stood down due to personal reasons from his work with the reserve team.
Torres is one of Atletico’s most recognizable players, and he has been idolized by supporters since breaking into the squad in 2001, when he helped them return to LaLiga after being demoted to the second division the previous season.
Even after joining Liverpool in 2007, he remained a fan favorite, and when he returned to the club in 2015, 45,000 people packed to the Vicente Calderon simply to see him presented.
In his final season with Atletico, he finally won a trophy, coming off the bench in their 3-0 Europa League final victory over Marseille.
