Following his first encounter in charge of the Toffees, Rafa Benitez praised Andros Townsend’s leadership, insisting that “you cannot purchase this trait on the fifth floor of John Lewis.”
A new signing has been made. Townsend impressed with a 45-minute appearance in the Florida Cup against Millonarios of Colombia, where fellow newcomer Asmir Begovic was the hero in a 10-9 penalty shootout victory.
Townsend and Begovic, as well as Demarai Gray, have joined the Toffees in a low-key move away from their usual mega-money signings this summer. Benitez, though, has emphasized that Townsend – a free transfer from Crystal Palace – brings characteristics other than his flank wizardry, praising the former England star’s leadership abilities.
He told the club’s official website, ‘He’s someone I know from my time at Newcastle.’ ‘He’s a high-caliber player.’ ‘We have a player who can give us something more because he has the desire and he’s in a position that the team needed,’ I said. ‘I was checking his fitness stats, too, and he was one of the best players in the Premier League in terms of work-rate.’ I think he’ll be a good fit for us.’
