Gianluigi Buffon Warns Italy’s Euro 2020 Hero Donnarumma To Expect Criticism Throughout His Career

Gianluigi Buffon has spoken out about the pressure of expectation that has surrounded him since the start of his career, and has cautioned Gianluigi Donnarumma that he, too, will be scrutinized. Buffon returned to Parma this summer after leaving the Old Lady for Juventus in 2001. The Italian spent a season at Paris Saint-Germain in 2018-19 before returning to Parma.

The 43-year-old won Ligue 1 during his stint at the Parc des Princes, but a blunder against Manchester United in the Champions League round of 16 proved costly, as PSG were eliminated on away goals.

With the game tied at 1-1, Marcus Rashford’s speculative effort was spilled by Buffon into the path of Romelu Lukaku, who scored his second of the night, before Rashford flipped the game on its head with a contentious 94th-minute penalty.

‘I had a fantastic season in Paris,’ Buffon told La Gazzetta dello Sport. That was a mistake I made in the Champions League.
