England completed their first Euro 2020 assignment by defeating the Czech Republic to win Group D and go undefeated in three games without surrendering a goal.

It means they’ll play their last-16 match at Wembley, where they might face World Cup holders France, old rivals Germany, or current European champions Portugal.

For the time being, football in England is staying at home; whether it stays there forever is another question. If England is to do so, manager Gareth Southgate will need to elicit a different response from his players than the occasionally stodgy cuisine provided during the group stage.

First and foremost. Before their opening match against Croatia in the sweltering heat of Wembley, England would have been content with this result.
