Real Sociedad defeated Athletic Bilbao in a close final in Seville to end a 34-year wait for the Copa del Rey. Mikel Oyarzabal sent the keeper the wrong way to send Sociedad the 2019-20 trophy after a five-minute VAR analysis of the penalty decision.
Martinez was originally sent off for fouling Portu in the box, but the penalty was reduced to a yellow card. On April 17, Bilbao will face Barcelona in the season’s final, hoping to end their own 37-year wait for a title.
Martinez came closest for Bilbao in a game of little opportunities, with a 25-yard attempt that was tipped over the bar in the first half.
David Silva, a former Manchester City midfielder, played 85 minutes for Sociedad, while Nacho Monreal, a former Arsenal left-back, played the entire game. On Wednesday, the two teams meet again in La Liga, with Sociedad in sixth place and Bilbao in ninth.
