The year for Manchester City. We’ve already heard the one before. Last season, recall, it was their year in Europe, with three one-off ties at neutral venues between them, and the cup, beginning with a quarter-final against Lyon, easily lost.
Before that, the rivalry was City’s year as well. Tottenham had 16 points in the quarter-finals, separating the teams when they were knocked out.
Then there was 2016-17, the first season in charge of Pep Guardiola. The greatest European prize had been brought to ground, it was said, except that Monaco had thoroughly beaten City in the last 16.
