Before Tottenham Hotspur’s crunch match against Manchester City, Jose Mourinho wheeled out his normal mind games, asking if Raheem Sterling had been really hurt over the international break.
Despite returning to his club from England duty because of a calf complaint before the comfortable Nations League win over Iceland, the winger was placed on the bench by Pep Guardiola.
As Tottenham ran out 2-0 winners to go top of the league thanks to strikes from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso, Sterling came on for the last 18 minutes.
‘We’re not as eager as Sterling because he’s been resting all week,’ jibed Mourin before kick-off. ‘But we’re all right, we’re ready for the game.’ We all know that Sterling will play (against Spurs),’ Mourinho said.
