Zidane Takes Blame For ‘A Poor Night’ As Real Madrid Suffers Defeat By A Covid-hit Shakhtar

As the 13-time European Cup winners were handed a crushing loss by a second-string Shakhtar Donetsk side, Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane took responsibility for ‘a poor night’. After 19 positive Covid-19 tests in the club, the Ukrainian champions arrived in Madrid without 13 first-team players, leaving them having to call up youth-team players.

After the break, goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior gave Real hope, but despite a dramatic finale, there was no escape for the most decorated side of the competition.

Federico Valverde thought he had struck a stoppage-time leveller but Srdjan Jovanovic disallowed the goal for offside after a search at the pitchside monitor referee. The loss follows a newly-promoted shock 1-0 home loss by Cadiz in La Liga on Saturday.
