After “showing his consistency” again in his side’s goalless Champions League draw with Sevilla, Edouard Mendy has confirmed himself as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper, says boss Frank Lampard.
Mendy, who joined in September from Rennes, created an outstanding save to help the Blues start their European campaign with a hard-earned point against Seville’s Europa League holders. The Senegal international marked his return from injury by clawing away Nemanja Gudelj’s header after it had flicked off Kurt Zouma in a game of few clear-cut chances.
Asked if Mendy is already Chelsea’s number one, Lampard said: “Yeah, at the moment. He’s shown his consistency. Chelsea heads to Russia next Wednesday to face Krasnodar with all four teams on one point with Group E rivals Rennes held 1-1 in France.”
