Newcastle Fans Protest Lack Of Transparency As To Why £300m Saudi-Led Takeover Fell Through

Posted by

On Friday, a handful of Newcastle fans protested outside No 10 Downing Street, asking more information about why the Premier League rejected the club’s £300 million Saudi takeover.

Last year, Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Public Investment Fund (PIF), made an unsuccessful £300 million takeover approach for the club, but the Premier League rejected it due to worries over the fund’s ties to the Saudi government.

After 17 weeks of waiting, the Saudis walked out of the contract in late July 2020, blaming the Premier League for a lack of resolution, which has enraged Newcastle fans ever since.

On Friday, Newcastle supporters held banners that read, ‘What is the Premier League hiding Boris?’ Next to photographs of all of England’s top owners, the hashtags “#transparencyforfans” and “The Premier League – run by the Big Six” were shown alongside the words “The Premier League – run by the Big Six.” Outside Boris Johnson’s London office, supporters were screaming “Newcastle, Newcastle.”
