Newcastle has suffered a big transfer setback, with Arsenal apparently planning to keep Joe Willock this season. During the second part of the 2020-21 season, the England U21 midfielder had a tremendously successful loan spell at St James’ Park, scoring in seven of the club’s final seven games.
In May, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce stated that the club was interested in keeping the 21-year-old on a permanent basis, but according to The Northern Echo, that deal is becoming increasingly doubtful.
According to the source, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been impressed with Willock’s application and attitude since returning for pre-season this week, and is willing to give the midfielder a chance to establish his worth throughout the pre-season.
Arsenal’s five-day pre-season training camp in Scotland begins on Tuesday evening when they face Hibernian at Easter Road at 6 p.m. BST.
