After she previously labeled taking the knee as “gesture politics,” England player Tyrone Mings has accused the home secretary of pretending to be shocked by racial insults.
After missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final, Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho were singled out. Priti Patel described the online vitriol aimed at the trio as “disgusted.” Mings claimed that by refusing to criticize spectators who booed the England team for kneeling, she had “stoked the fire.”
When some spectators booed the players taking the knee before the competition, the England footballer and member of the Euros squad was enraged by what he saw as the government’s lack of action.
In recent years, the act of kneeling has become a major symbol in sport and during anti-racist protests, with England players taking the pose at the start of their matches.
