Gareth Southgate took responsibility for England’s heartbreaking shootout loss to Italy on Sunday, when youngsters Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka all missed penalties.
After taking a 1-0 lead thanks to Luke Shaw in the second minute, England was thrown into a tense shootout after Leonardo Bonucci equalized.
England’s first two penalties were scored by Harry Kane and Harry Maguire, but Rashford and Sancho failed to convert, and Saka’s deciding spot-kick was saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
When Italy came back into the game in the second half, Southgate believed his side’s lack of calm on the ball was their biggest issue. ‘We got off to a good start,’ Southgate added. ‘Our system performed admirably against theirs.’ They had to have a moment where they entered the game.
