Fans were disappointed after England fell on penalties in the Euro 2020 final to Italy. The Three Lions were defeated in front of 60,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium, while millions more watched in bars, fan zones, and homes around the country.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who were accompanying Prince George at Wembley, praised the Italian team.
During pre-match unrest at the stadium, London’s Metropolitan Police said 49 arrests had been made as of 02:00 BST. It went on to say that 19 officers were “hurt while confronting dangerous crowds.”
“Heartbreaking. Congratulations on a fantastic victory, Azzurri! “The royal couple took to Twitter to express their feelings.
“England, you’ve all come so far, but it wasn’t our day this time. You can all be proud of yourselves and hold your heads high because I know there’s more to come.”
