This weekend, the referee at the core of the VAR controversy in Saturday’s Merseyside derby will only be in the fourth official role in the Premier League.
After failing to search for a red card for Jordan Pickford, David Coote, the official supervising proceedings at Stockley Park for Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Everton, was taken out of the limelight.
In the first half at Goodison Park, the England goalkeeper inflicted a season-ending knee injury on Virgil van Dijk with a horror challenge, but Coote forgot that the rules allowed him to review the incident despite the offside in the build-up.
